A court ruling overturning the approval of an environmental study on building flats on Fanling golf course won't significantly affect Hong Kong's public housing supply over the next decade, Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday.

In a decision handed down on Monday, the High Court called on the authorities to consult the public again on plans to build public flats on 9.5 hectares of the century-old course.

Lee said while overall housing goals over the next 10 years won't change, the ruling will affect how many homes they can build at the golf course and how long it will take.

"Following the judgment, in terms of the number of public housing units, the density and the delay in the housing production, we are seeing a significant impact. And that means the government will have to conduct a holistic assessment," he said before the weekly Executive Council meeting.

The CE told reporters that officials have secured land to produce more than 308,000 public housing units in the next 10 years.

"The change in relation to the public housing development on Fanling golf course should not pose a major change to the public housing production target," he said.

Lee said the government will conduct analyses before deciding the way forward, including whether to launch an appeal.
