The captain of Hong Kong, China men's team, James Christie, on Thursday said the squad would be looking to build on their recent success in Asia as they enter the final stretch of training in the run-up to the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament in March.
Having been named as the successor to Max Woodward in September, Christie weighed in on what the opportunity to lead Hong Kong meant to him.
"I've always said I'm not much of a talker," Christie said.
"There's not much difference between being a player and a captain – I need to lead from the front a bit more, but I like to lead through the games and matches that I play."
Christie, 28, has already tasted early success in leading the SAR to a clean sweep of victories during the Asia Rugby Sevens Series this autumn.
In November, the SAR defeated Japan in the final of the last leg of the tournament in Thailand, repeating its earlier successes in China and South Korea, to become the first side to win all of its 15 matches.
But Christie said the team's eyes are on the bigger prize on home soil, as the annual tournament makes its debut at the Kai Tak Sports Park for the first time next year.
"It's huge motivation, the new facilities look fantastic," said Christie.
"Just looking forward to running out a new spot with a new team and new faces, so hopefully, it'll be all good."
He also added that fitness, skills, and cohesion are major aspects that the team are looking to polish up on ahead of the Sevens.
Meanwhile, Chloe Chan, the new co-captain of the women's side, said she wants to encourage her teammates on and off the field, to ensure that the team bonds well together.
"I really want our team to come together and perform and do well in the Challenger Series," she said.
As for veteran co-captain Natasha Olson-Thorne, she said she's looking forward to working with a new partner.
"Chloe Chan has actually been on the leadership group for quite a while, so she has stepped up. She's been a leader multiple times before, so I see it going quite smoothly," Olson-Thorne told RTHK.
"She's got a lot of experience and a lot of positivity leading into the team environment."
