Hongkongers appeared to be more generous with their spending as they prepared for winter solstice gatherings on Saturday, but wet market stall-holders remained cautious about their business.

The day, in Chinese tradition, is typically celebrated with family, when people gather for a meal at home or at a restaurant.

People at wet markets were looking to spend a bit more than usual, with some opting to shop for hot pot.

"I plan to spend around HK$1,000... I think I should stay home to celebrate during holidays," said shopper Ma.

Another shopper, surnamed Cheung, said he was willing to almost double his usual spending of HK$300 and had a budget of more than HK$500.

But vendors at wet markets were not hoping for a jump in business on the festive day.

"There isn't much of a difference nowadays whether it's a holiday or not... There are fewer large families and fewer people are buying ingredients at the market," said merchant Yeung. "Business has gotten worse one year after the other."

"Business has been a bit quieter than before... Although there were fewer people, some still came to the wet market to shop because they know it's winter solstice," said another stall owner.
