A domestically-produced C919 aircraft has completed its first commercial flight to Hong Kong amid much fanfare.

The homegrown passenger jet, operated by China Eastern airlines and carrying around 160 passengers, took off from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport at 8.15am on Wednesday and landed in the SAR about two and a half hours later.

Passengers were treated to an exceptional travel experience, with each of them receiving a special framed boarding pass – printed with the flight number, date, as well as the letters “C919” - as a souvenir.

One of those on-board the full flight was Ryan, who flew on the C919 aircraft for the first time.

“I’m also a citizen of Hong Kong. It feels really special. Shanghai is my hometown and Hong Kong is like my second hometown. It’s really special to be able to experience the Chinese manufactured C919 on this flight,” he said.

Ryan described the flight experience as being “impressively good.”

“I am quite fortunate to get the bulkhead seat. It has plenty of leg room which is nice on a narrow-body jet. Looking back, the leg room is also big [for other seats] and the tray table is pretty nice,” he said.

13-year-old Joe, a flying enthusiast, flew solo.

“I think the control of noise is very nice. Because it’s the first aircraft of China and in some ways it’s even better than Boeing and Airbus. The seats… are really comfortable,” he said.

“The meal was really good... We had this sort of Shanghai cake and another cake that had C919 letters on it and it was very delicious.”

Other passengers like Gin and his son Harrison, who just happened to be on this maiden flight, said they were impressed with the flight experience.

“I thought it would be very loud but the noise wasn’t big at all. The seats were quite spacious,” six-year-old Harrison said.

Meanwhile, the captain of the inaugural flight, Shang Feng, told RTHK that he's honoured and excited to take passengers to Hong Kong on board the C919.

“Hong Kong is our ninth destination with C919. Over the last two years, C919 has been flying to major airports in mainland cities and it fully showcases its ability to adapt and operate smoothly in different locations. I believe future regular flights to Hong Kong will be smooth,” he said.

China Eastern said it will be using the C919 jet for one round-trip flight between Shanghai and Hong Kong per day, with the return trip scheduled for departure at 12.55pm.
