Sources said an off-duty customs officer was arrested on suspicion of tampering with a vehicle last Friday, when a motorcyclist died in a traffic accident in Ngau Tau Kok.

Police said a 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of tampering with a motor vehicle on the day of the fatal traffic accident.

Officers said they were still investigating and would seek advice from the Department of Justice. The arrested man has been released on bail.

Customs said it would not comment on the case as it is still under investigation.

The accident happened at around 5.46pm last Friday.

Police said the deceased 27-year-old man was riding his motorcycle along Wang Kee Street towards Lam Hing Street.

He reportedly lost control of his vehicle and rammed into a roadside iron pole near Central Mail Centre.

The motorcyclist, who had sustained serious injuries, was declared dead at the scene.

Police also said a 40-year-old male passerby was knocked down by the motorcycle.

He sustained injuries to his hand and was sent to United Christian Hospital for treatment.
