A leading travel agency said on Tuesday it has no plans to adjust the itinerary of its package tours to Thailand, amid an ongoing investigation by the Hong Kong government to see if any SAR resident was unlawfully detained there.

In an interview with RTHK, EGL Tours executive director Steve Huen insisted Thailand remains safe for recreational travellers, and dismissed fears that people would be abducted on the streets.

He pointed out the SAR's amber outbound travel alert was issued years ago in response to mass demonstrations in Thailand, and had nothing to do with the current situation.

But Huen admitted that enquiries for travel products in the region have dropped. A few individual customers who decided to go ahead signed up for package tours because they felt safer to stick to a group, he added.

He did offer some general tips for travellers whenever they are overseas.

"When heading out at night for a drink or walk, you should be careful," he said.

"You should also stay alert, and for instance, not let others exploit our kindness and trick us into into suffering financial losses."

He was confident the jitters will die down soon, especially after government officials clarified on Monday that none of the Hongkongers involved in the alleged incidents of false imprisonment were abducted

A task force led by Undersecretary for Security Michael Cheuk is expected to return from Bangkok on Tuesday evening.
