A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck a mountainous, rural area of Taiwan's south on Tuesday, according to China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC), with reports of minor damage.

The quake hit at 12:17am local time, with its epicentre at a depth of 14 km, the CENC said.

Tremors were felt in Taipei, lasting for over 10 seconds, and several aftershocks occurred after the quake.

There were no immediate reports of deaths from the quake, though rescuers were still assessing damage.

Taiwan’s fire department said 15 people were sent to hospital for minor injuries.

Among them were six people, including one child, who were rescued from a collapsed house in Nanxi District in the city of Tainan.

Chipmaking giant TSMC said it evacuated workers from some of its central and southern factories.

Taiwan lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the line of seismic faults encircling the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes occur. (Agencies)
