Senior Counsel Jose-Antonio Maurellet has been elected the new chairman of the Bar Association, succeeding the outgoing Victor Dawes.

Senior Counsels Martin Hui and Eva Sit, meanwhile, were chosen as vice-chairmen.

Speaking to reporters after the election on Thursday evening, Maurellet said the association will continue to defend the rule of law and judicial independence.

He added that the professional body will adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct, discipline and etiquette.

He noted that while there are calls for Hong Kong to focus on developing the economy this year, he stressed the rule of law and economic development go hand in hand to ensure the long-term prosperity and stability of the city.

Maurellet also expressed hope that more overseas non-permanent judges can be appointed to the city’s top court.

“Obviously we would welcome the appointment of further such experienced jurists to our court. We believe that it strengthens Hong Kong as a jurisdiction and is also supported by members of the public,” he said.

Maurellet was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2016, and had served as vice chairman for the Bar Association for six years.
