A worker died after falling to the ground at a construction site on Tsung Tau Ha Road in Fo Tan.

Police said they received a report at around 1pm on Friday that a man fell from a height of between three and four metres.

Emergency personnel were called to scene where the man was certified dead.

The Labour Department said officers were sent to investigate the cause of the incident.

Chiu Kin-keung, the vice chairman of the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union, said the deceased welding worker was on a spider lift platform before the fall.

He believed that a fractured steel beam struck the platform, causing it and the worker to fall.

The worker had his safety harness attached to the platform but that also broke, Chiu said.

Meanwhile, the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims said it would be providing support to the family of the man killed.

It said the accident marked at least the 10th fatal fall since the beginning of last year.
