President Xi Jinping on Monday said the country has made solid progress in advancing Chinese modernisation amid "complex and challenging" situations over the past twelve months.

Speaking at a high-level reception ahead of the Lunar New Year, the President touched on the country’s achievements.

"In the Year of the Dragon, we demonstrated vitality and a can-do spirit. We endured storms and saw the rainbow," Xi said at the reception held by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council.

“Faced with complex and challenging situations, China responded with composure and implemented a range of comprehensive measures, overcame difficulties and forged ahead with determination.”

Going forward, the President expressed confidence that the country will continue to forge ahead.

"We will undoubtedly break new ground in reform and development as long as we strengthen our conviction and confidence, confront problems and obstacles directly, and tackle risks and challenges without hesitation."

Xi also extended Spring Festival greetings to all Chinese people, including residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. (Additional reporting by Xinhua)
