A Hong Kong resident who had been detained for illegal work in Myanmar returned to the SAR late Monday night.

Accompanied by members of a government task force, the man arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport via a flight from Bangkok. He was subsequently taken to the airport police station.

During a press briefing, Assistant Secretary for Security Paddy Yuen said the man is very happy to be back.

"He was grateful to see us head to Thailand to follow up on his case, and very excited to be able to return to Hong Kong, and reunite with his family before the Lunar New Year," Yuen said.

The official said he won’t disclose additional details of the case, including whether a ransom was paid, to avoid complicating the future course of action.

He also thanked Chinese diplomats in Southeast Asia, as well as local authorities for assisting in the rescue operation.

Yuen added that work is still underway to bring the rest of the victims home.

"We must also remember that there are still ten Hong Kong residents who have not been released," he said.

The assistant security chief reminded Hongkongers to stay vigilant against job offers that promise high salaries without the need for professional skills, or require the person to transport goods between places.
