The SAR government on Friday said it would file a complaint to the World Trade Organisation over the United States' decision to impose an additional 10 percent tariffs on Hong Kong products.
In a statement, a government spokesperson said the US measure was “grossly inconsistent” with WTO rules.
The spokesperson added that Washington had ignored that the city is a separate customs territory as stated in Article 116 of the Basic Law, and recognised by the WTO.
"The HKSAR Government will formally launch procedures in accordance with the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism against the US' unreasonable measures to defend our legitimate rights."
The spokesperson also said the SAR supports the rules-based multilateral trading system.
The SAR government urged the US to rectify its measures immediately.
