Acting Chief Executive Eric Chan on Tuesday said an opening ceremony would be held at the Kai Tak Sports Park on March 1, marking its official commencement.

Speaking ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting, Chan said the 90-minute ceremony would start at 6.30pm, featuring large-scale dance and sports performances by local and mainland performers.

He said there would be four themes, showcasing Hong Kong's role in sports and cultural exchanges in different eras.

Chan said the opening of the park would be an historic moment, and authorities would seize the opportunity to unleash the potential of the facility.

"The Kai Tak Sports Park, as Hong Kong's largest sports infrastructure ever, will bring new experiences [in terms of] sports, leisure, dining and shopping for Hong Kong people, as well as mainland and overseas tourists," he said.

"I have high expectations and confidence [in] the opening of the sports park. I believe more large-scale sports, cultural and recreational events will be held in Hong Kong, promoting the development of sports and other industries."

He said more than a dozen of test events had been held at the sports park, and expressed confidence the facility would be ready for its opening in March.
