Team China top medals table at Asian Winter Games

Team China dominated the medals table at the Harbin Asian Winter Games which close on Friday evening.

The national team ended the Games with 85 medals – 32 gold, 27 silver and 26 bronze – while South Korea and Japan followed in second and third place respectively.

On the last day of the Games, Kazakhstan won the gold medal in men's ice hockey after beating second-placed Japan 5-0. South Korea overcame China in the bronze medal game 5-2 to secure the final spot on the podium.

On the women's side, Japan took gold, while Kazakhstan and China completed the podium.

In curling, the Philippines claimed their first gold medal of the Games in the men's event. They beat South Korea 5-3 to bring them to the top of the podium. China won bronze, after defeating Hong Kong, China 10-3.

In the women's curling gold medal game, South Korea edged out China 7-2 for the win, while Japan won their bronze medal game to end up in the top three spots.

Husain Al Musallam, the director general of the Olympic Council of Asia, said the Harbin Asian Winter Games has set a benchmark for major multi-sport events in Asia.

"Our athletes enjoy competing here and wish to come back to Harbin. The rest of the world came here and witnessed how Harbin managed to organise such a big event in 18 months with not only successful facilities but also the details for everybody," he said.

The closing ceremony will take place on Friday night at the Harbin International Conference, Exhibition and Sports Centre, with Premier Li Qiang in attendance to host a welcoming banquet and bilateral events for foreign leaders. (Additional reporting from Xinhua)
