The 2025 Asian Winter Games concluded on Friday in Harbin, marking an historic achievement for the Hong Kong, China delegation, as they delivered their best-ever performance in the competition.

Timothy Fok, first vice president of the Olympic Council of Asia, declared the 9th Asian Winter Games closed at the Harbin International Conference, Exhibition and Sports Centre, where he also highlighted the record-breaking participation at the Games, with over 1,200 athletes from 34 countries and regions — the highest turnout in the event's history.

"This is truly a unique and charming part of China and the world - not only for the beauty of the city and the landscape but also for the warmth and friendliness of the local people," he said.

The closing ceremony was a vibrant celebration filled with song and dance, followed by participating delegations and athletes entering the venue.

Curler Martin Yan carried the flag for Hong Kong, China, while Chinese skier Xu Mengtao served as the flag bearer for the national team.

Kenneth Fok, vice president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and chef de mission for the SAR delegation, said the team achieved significant breakthroughs despite winter sports being relatively uncommon in Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong has been gaining prominence on the world stage in winter sports. With the valuable experience gained by competing with top players in the Games, our athletes will make significant progress in their levels," he said.

"I am hopeful that more young winter sports enthusiasts will join the team, contributing to a sustainable and promising development in the city’s ice and snow sports. Our winter athletes will continue to excel on global stage."

Hong Kong, China made its debut in curling and alpine skiing at these Games, with the men's curling team placing fourth and an alpine skier achieving a record 10th place.

The men's ice hockey team also reached the quarterfinals for the first time, while athletes in short track speed skating and figure skating ranked in the top 15.

Trojena, Saudi Arabia, is set to host the 10th Asian Winter Games in 2029, marking the first time the event will be held in West Asia. (Additional reporting from Xinhua)
