The so-called "update" to the Taiwan fact sheet displayed on the US State Department website is another example of Washington using the Taiwan question to contain China, and China urges the US to immediately correct its mistakes, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Monday.
The US State Department removed a line on its website stating that it does not support "Taiwan independence".
Guo reiterated that there is only one China and Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legal government representing the whole of China.
He added that it is a prevailing international consensus and basic norm governing international relations, and also a solemn commitment the US has made in the three China-US joint communiqués.
Guo stressed that the revision made by the US State Department gravely backpedalled on its position on Taiwan-related issues, and has sent a severely wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
"We urge the US to immediately correct its wrongdoings, abide by the one-China principle and three China-US joint communiqués," Guo said.
Meanwhile, Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman of the Taiwan Affairs Office, urged the US to handle the Taiwan question with the "greatest prudence" and stop sending any wrong signals that condone or abet "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
The revision was a "severe regression" regarding the US stance on the Taiwan question, she added. (Xinhua)
