The Democratic Party on Thursday evening announced its intention to disband following a central committee meeting to discuss its future.
But party chairman Lo Kin-hei said a general meeting would be held at a later date and the disbandment would only move ahead if 75 percent of attending members approved.
“It is a decision that we make based on our understanding of the current political situation and things like that,” he said.
Lo also said he would chair a three-person working group to handle the initial preparations for the party's shutdown.
