Athletes participating in a handball test event for the National Games on Saturday said they were happy with the atmosphere and facilities at the Kai Tak Sports Park.

The men's handball test event is underway at the Kai Tak Arena over Saturday and Sunday.

The competing teams are Guangdong, Jiangsu, Macau and Hong Kong, China.

Wang Quan, a handballer from the Jiangsu team, said the arena is comparable to those in Europe.

"I think this venue is very professional. Since I have played in Europe before, I find that the lighting and flooring here are very similar to those in Europe - basically the same level," he said.

Hong Kong men's handball team captain Freddie Tse said the venue arrangements were first-class, rating them 9 out of 10.

"I'm very excited and amazed. It's my first time at Hong Kong's home court, and it's rare to hear our own language. You can see that the spectators are our family and friends. Even the people around us – it feels so familiar," he said.

Huang Peijie from the Guangdong handball team, meanwhile, said the atmosphere was excellent and players were eager to compete.

Some spectators told RTHK they were there to support the SAR team and looked forward to watching the actual Games in person.

"I play handball myself, that's why I follow this sport closely. I hope more people will get to know this sport. I want to see the Hong Kong team's techniques and learn a move or two," said a spectator.

In the match between Jiangsu and Guangdong, Jiangsu led by four points at half-time and managed to secure a spot in the final with a 29-23 victory.

The Hong Kong team, meanwhile, also made the final after beating Macau 33-19.

The final between Jiangsu and Hong Kong will be staged at the Kai Tak Arena on Sunday afternoon.
