The Transport and Logistics Bureau is aiming to complete a review on the fixed penalties for traffic-related offences and various fees and tolls this year, its chief said on Friday.

In the latest financial budget, the government revealed that it is hoping to increase revenue by HK$2 billion annually by doing so.

Speaking at a press conference, Mable Chan said the bureau will focus on traffic charges that have not gone up for years.

"Take parking meters as an example, [the charge] has not been adjusted for more than 30 years. And for fixed penalties for traffic-related offences such as parking [illegally], those too have not been adjusted for almost 30 years," she said.

"Therefore, our intention, apart from adhering to the principle of exercising fiscal prudence, is also to pay attention to traffic management, as well as road safety."

The transport minister said officials hope "an appropriate adjustment" can serve as a deterrent.

Chan noted that drivers have to pay tolls at eight out of 18 government tunnels.

She assured the public that the government will also consider people's affordability when carrying out the review.
