The Hang Seng Index gained 16.02 points, or 0.07 per cent, to open at 23,616.33 on Thursday.

On the mainland, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.02 percent at the opening at 3,371.09, while the Shenzhen Component Index opened 0.12 percent lower at 10,830.11.

Overnight Wall Street stocks regained some ground helped by a rise in tech shares. A better-than-expected inflation report also assuaged investor concerns about the US economy and the direction of interest rates. (with additional reporting from Xinhua and AFP)
