Professor Patrick Lau says efficient checks of athlete IDs would help organisers
An academic who chairs Baptist University's Department of Sport, Physical Education, and Health on Monday said authorities could improve the efficiency and ease of ID checks on athletes who participate in cross-boundary sports events.

Speaking on RTHK's Hong Kong Today programme, Professor Patrick Lau said this could be one way to make overall improvements when the city hosted future cross-boundary events.

He added this wouldn't be a problem because the city had organised cross-boundary events in the past and was constantly learning from previous experiences to make things even better.

"After 20 or 30 something years of technological advancement... there are checks of the identity cards, they [athletes] will be given a chip when they pass the immigration and customs office between the two regions. We have overcome the [previous] barriers and I don't think we have any technical problems at the moment," Lau said.

Lau also said the Kai Tak Sports Park was ready to host the National Games later this year.

"In terms of the facilities, I believe it is good enough to host the National Games this November."
