China urged the United States to correct its wrongful imposition of reciprocal tariffs and address economic and trade differences with China and other countries through negotiations, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said.

Guo made the remarks at a regular press briefing on Thursday in response to a query about Washington's announcement of reciprocal tariffs on major trading partners.

He said additional US tariffs on exports from China and other countries seriously violate World Trade Organization regulations and severely undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system.

"The Chinese side firmly opposes this and will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," Guo said, adding there's no winner in a trade or tariff war.

US President Donald Trump announced a 34 percent tariff on Chinese imports. Including the 20 percent duty imposed earlier this year, the total levies for China stand at 54 percent. (Reporting from Xinhua)
