YouTube streamer IShowSpeed's flash visit to the city last week shows that Hong Kong is safe, fun and open, according to Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law.
Some netizens and lawmakers have questioned the rough planning of the itinerary, saying the government missed a great opportunity to promote Hong Kong.
In an interview with Ta Kung Pao and Wen Wei Po newspapers, Law said Speed's nine-and-a-half-hour citywide livestream served as an excellent promotion of the SAR.
Law said she believes spontaneity is the streamer's selling point and that he might not have wanted to follow an official itinerary.
The crowds that gathered during his MTR ride caused some disruption, which was unexpected even for Speed himself, Law added.
Law also noted there have been changes in the ways tourism is promoted, adding that online influencers have become an important way for people to uncover new places.
"Hong Kong is a very open place. Anyone can have a great time as long as they follow the rules," she said, adding that it sent a great message in the current geopolitical climate.
