The Commerce Ministry on Thursday said China will continue taking countermeasures to safeguard the country's sovereignty, security and development interests, emphasising that protectionism is a one-way road.
At a news conference, ministry spokesperson He Yongqian pointed out that China’s foreign trade resiliency has not diminished, despite facing increasingly significant challenges.
She said authorities are confident about its ability in dealing with various trade risks and challenges, and that the nation will hedge against uncertainty coming from the external environment.
China will "follow through to the end" if the US insists on its own way, He said.
The ministry also warned that the US tariffs severely impact global economic stability, warning that there is no winner in a trade war.
"The US has recently... announced the imposition of indiscriminate tariffs on all its trading partners, including China, which seriously infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies and severely impact the stability of the global economic order," He said.
She added that while the door is always open, using pressure, threats and blackmail is not the way to deal with China.
Dialogue must be on the basis of mutual respect and equality, she said.
At a regular Foreign Ministry briefing, spokesman Lin Jian said China does not want to fight trade and tariff wars, but will not flinch when it comes.
He added that the US tariffs go "against the whole world" and seriously undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system as well as the stability of the global economic order. (Agencies)
