The Office of the Ombudsman said on Friday it’s launching an investigation into how the Highways Department handles damage to roads, such as uneven surfaces and potholes.
The watchdog added that it has also received public complaints about the department’s ineffective monitoring of contractors and delays to repair work.
Ombudsman Jack Chan said it’s essential for the department to ensure roads are safe and convenient for public use.
“Moreover, as sudden and exceptionally severe rainstorms brought about by extreme weather have happened from time to time in recent years, road closures due to subsidence and serious flooding also take place now and then,” he said.
“In this light, I have decided to launch a direct investigation operation to examine the Highways Department 's work on the repair and maintenance of public roads.”
People are being invited to put forward any views they have on the matter by May 11.
