The director of the central government's liaison office Zheng Yanxiong said on Tuesday that Hong Kong should push for greater development and contribute more to the nation.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Security Education Day, Zheng pointed out that the office will fully implement the central government's request to fully support the chief executive and SAR government to turn Beijing's hopes into concrete actions.
The director said Hong Kong should firmly coordinate high-quality development and a high level of security to achieve a positive interaction.
He emphasised that if security cannot be maintained, development will not be solid.
If development is delayed and neglected, the basis of security will not be firm, Zheng said, adding that Hong Kong has to maintain its positive momentum.
He also said that the SAR should contribute more to the nation.
"The new phase of Hong Kong has both traditional strengths, as well as new advantages, such as AI, research and development, innovation and technology, talent hub and coordinated development with the Greater Bay Area, etc.
"It even has unique strengths such as institutional innovation and acting as a gateway between the mainland and the world."
The liaison office director also stressed that safeguarding national security needs continuous effort.
