A concern group on Sunday urged the government and the tourism sector to adjust their strategies and focus on developing eco-tourism in Hong Kong.

The Junior Chamber International Hong Kong, China surveyed over 800 local people and 400 foreigners from 35 countries and regions in March and April.

It found that over 40 percent of foreigners polled were interested in visiting eco-tourism spots, followed by historical and heritage sites, and arts and culture events.

About 80 percent of them chose Sai Kung to be one of their favourite eco-tourism spots, and 70 percent of them picked Tai O.

A consultant for the survey, Paul Chan, who is also the CEO of Walk in Hong Kong, said tourists no longer only come to the city for shopping and dining as the survey also showed shopping and dinning were most recommended by locals.

"I think we need to be very sensitive about these preference and interest changes," he said.

"For the trade, they need to know how to work out a collaboration with local community partners and manage to work out the tourism products which can somehow unlock these potentials, unlock these tourism resources."

Chan said to achieve "tourism everywhere", the city must know its advantages in developing cultural and green tourism, and protect its unique resources.
