The Immigration Department on Monday said more than 895,000 people crossed the border with the mainland, the last day of the Labour Day Golden Week break.
In a statement, it said a total of over 530,000 people had entered Hong Kong and around 360,000 had left via the 13 control points
At Heung Yuen Wai, locals and mainland visitors were seen queuing for buses in the morning.
One of them, surnamed Chung, told RTHK that she wanted to spend her day in the mainland for the cheaper food.
"Eating out in Hong Kong is expensive, the food doesn't even taste good, and service attitude is bad," she said.
"I will be going to Dongmen, buy a pair of glasses and dine there. I plan to spend around HK$2,000."
A man surnamed Mok said he spent two nights with his family in Dongmen.
"We go north almost every long holiday. We spent around HK$400 for a hotel room per night on the mainland, but it would've been triple the price in Hong Kong," he said.
