Hong Kong's first milk bank has seen "strong support" in less than half a year of operation, with donated milk helping about 90 babies in need.

The Hong Kong Breast Milk Bank has so far recruited more than 230 donors and collected over 800 litres of milk, according to the Hospital Authority on Sunday.

Located at the Hong Kong Children's Hospital, the breast milk facility began operating in January and aimed to collect 1,000 litres of milk a year to help premature or critically-ill newborns.

"So far, about 90 clinically needy infants have benefitted and the results are heartening," the authority said in a statement.

Rosanna Wong, the bank's director, called for more donations from prospective and new mothers.

"The [bank] has received strong support from the community in just half a year, reflecting Hong Kong's spirit of compassion and willingness to make a difference," Wong said.

"I call on expectant and new mothers to join this 'new force' of donors, passing on the baby-friendly spirit and contributing breast milk to spread love and hope."

To become a donor, one must be currently lactating with a baby that's under one year old.
