Foreign Minister Wang Yi will be in town next week.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Wang will attend the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong on May 30.

Speaking in a regular briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said high-level representatives from nearly 60 countries and some 20 international organisations, including the United Nations, are set to attend the ceremony.

She said the International Organisation for Mediation will be the world's first inter-governmental legal body dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation, and serve as an important mechanism in safeguarding the UN Charter.

"We welcome support and participation from more countries in creating the International Organisation for Mediation, to better enable it to coordinate with existing international disputes settlement mechanisms to make each other more effective, and provide more options and pathways to resolve international disputes through efficient and peaceful means, and better safeguard international fairness and justice," Mao said.

The SAR administration, for its part, said it'll make full preparations for the signing ceremony.

In a statement, a spokesperson said establishing the organisation's headquarters in Hong Kong "demonstrates the city's unique advantages and opportunities in international mediation".

"Upon its establishment, the [organisation] will provide friendly, flexible, economical and efficient mediation services, thereby building Hong Kong as a capital for international mediation," the spokesperson added.
