There will be strong interest among visitors for "made-in-Hong-Kong" industrial tourism, one of the city's largest industry groups said, with the concept possibly going beyond just showcasing local food and beverage brands.
Steve Chuang, who chairs the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, also said industrial tourism has been a success story in other parts of the world.
"We foresee a strong interest in industrial tourism in Hong Kong," Chuang told RTHK.
"This model has a proven track record internationally and locally.
"A lot of Hong Kong people had good experiences, say, in whiskey factory tours in Scotland, or chocolate factory visits in Europe, or instant noodle experiences in Japan."
As part of government measures to attract more visitors, four industrial brands – sauce makers Lee Kum Kee and Pat Chun, bakery chain Kee Wah and probiotics company Yakult – are to organise tours with travel agencies.
"Food manufacturing is a natural starting point for this initiative... The concept is also applicable across other sectors such as textiles and electronics, particularly advanced manufacturing in Hong Kong is highly worth showcasing," Chuang said.
"This initiative reinforces the quality, creative and technological capabilities of Hong Kong's manufacturing sector."
He said it might take a few months for some of the factories and manufacturers in Hong Kong involved in the tourism initiative to make preparations before they can host tourists, such as building showrooms and pathways for guided tours.
