Transport minister Mable Chan on Friday met with the MTR Corporation's senior management, and demanded the company follow up on the Tseung Kwan O Line disruption.

Thursday's five-hour halt began during the evening rush hour, stranding thousands, with the firm blaming it on multiple system failures, including signalling problems and a power supply trip.

In a post on social media, the minister said she urged the firm to conduct a risk assessment for its entire rail network in a comprehensive manner, speed up its use of technology, and beef up what she called its abilities to conduct predictive tests and maintenance to build up the network's resilience.

Chan also asked the MTR to improve its emergency response arrangements, such as evacuating passengers and disseminating information.

The minister went on to say that she instructed the Transport Department to carefully review how it could strengthen the coordination of different public transport operators' emergency response.

She said this would allow for fast deployment of other modes of transport to minimise the impact on the public.
