The deputy chief secretary said on Saturday the government will launch a study with the aim of helping industries roll out products that can better cater to the needs of elderly.

Warner Cheuk made the remarks days after the authorities announced 30 measures to better promote the silver economy, including calling on the retail sector to offer discounts to older consumers.

He told an RTHK radio programme that the study will look into the consumption and lifestyle habits of people over 60.

"Those aged 60 to 69 are still relatively young, while those aged above 70 may have different consumption demands," he said.

"Therefore, we need to look into that and see what people's spending habits are, as well as what products they like or are more concerned about."

Cheuk was asked if the government would wait for the survey results before rolling out the next batch of measures.

"We rolled out 30 measures first, which we had discussed for quite some time and the measures are very extensive," he said.

"We do not rule out the possibility that more measures will be rolled out later.

"But we won't say we need to have a first and second phase.

"Our next focus is to implement these measures."

He said the various sectors have to decide by themselves what kinds of discounts they are going to offer and whether they will be long term.

On a related issue, Cheuk said he believes not all firms will stick to the government's practice of adopting 65 as the retirement age.

He added that it will depend on the needs of companies, saying that they will be more willing to employ the elderly when there is a manpower shortage.
