Chief Executive John Lee on Monday paid a visit to the new director of Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong, Zhou Ji, at his office in Western.
Zhou had visited Lee at Government House on Saturday after his appointment the day before.
Writing on social media, Lee said they exchanged views on the opportunities and challenges the SAR is facing.
The chief executive said he shares the same views as Zhou on building a better Hong Kong and staying fully committed to the implementation of the One Country, Two Systems principle.
The new liaison office director had mentioned during community visits on Sunday that both the central government and the people want to see the building of a better Hong Kong.
"The SAR government and I will do our utmost for the successful implementation of the One Country, Two Systems principle," Lee wrote.
"We'll keep working hard for the better livelihoods of the people and Hong Kong's development, seizing opportunities and overcoming challenges as we will not be fazed by difficulties."
Zhou, for his part, stressed that the chief executive and the SAR government are "the head of the household" and take full responsibility for the governance of Hong Kong.
In a statement, the director said he will fully serve Hong Kong in accordance with the law and further support the SAR's development.
The liaison office, he reiterated, will fully and accurately implement the principles of One Country, Two Systems and "patriots administering Hong Kong".
