President Xi Jinping on Thursday held phone talks with US President Donald Trump at the latter's request, according to Xinhua News Agency, amid a dispute over US tariffs.
Xi said dialogue and cooperation are the only right choice for the two countries, and called on Washington to withdraw "negative measures" against Beijing.
The president called on both sides to make good use of the established economic and trade consultation mechanism, treat each other with equality, respect each other's concerns and strive for win-win outcomes.
According to Xinhua, Xi said "to correct the course of the big ship of China-US ties, it is especially necessary for both sides to eliminate all kinds of disturbances."
He also said the US should handle the Taiwan question with caution "to avoid very few 'Taiwan independence' separatists dragging China and the US into conflict and confrontation".
Xi added that the US leader is welcome to visit China again, following his previous visit in 2017 during the first Trump administration.
Trump, for his part, said the US will continue to uphold the one-China policy.
He also said Chinese students are welcome to study in the US, after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier that the Trump administration would “aggressively revoke” visas for Chinese students.
The conversation between the two leaders came as stalled tariff negotiations between China and the US roiled global trade.
Trade negotiations between the world's two largest economies stalled shortly after a May 12 agreement to reduce their tariff rates while talks played out.
According to Xinhua, Xi and Trump agree that teams of both sides should continue to implement the consensus reached in Geneva.
Trump has lowered his 145 percent tariffs on Chinese goods to 30 percent for 90 days to allow for talks. China also reduced its taxes on US goods from 125 percent to 10 percent. (Agencies)
