Freebies, discounts and 71,000 free train tickets will be on offer as part of the upcoming July 1 celebrations to mark the 28th anniversary of the SAR.

In announcing the celebration plans on Tuesday, Chief Executive John Lee said more than 1,000 restaurants and shops are celebrating the day by chiming in with discounts.

"This year, more enterprises are rolling out discounts on July 1... I wish to thank all sectors of society for their active response to offer residents with various discounts and diverse celebration activities," he said.

"I encourage, and I believe, that more will participate, so that the whole of Hong Kong and our citizens can celebrate the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland."

The MTR Corporation will hand out 71,000 electronic tickets by lucky draw on July 1 to allow commuters to take one free trip, with winners given half a year to redeem the trips.

As well, the Airport Express will be free for children aged between three and 11, while those aged 60 or above will enjoy half-price rides.

People can take the tram across Hong Kong Island in the first three days of next month as well as the ferry between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai on July 1 at no cost.

Commuters can also use vouchers to take free ferry rides on five other routes.

Residents will be welcome to use various indoor and outdoor facilities run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department free of charge.

A number of exhibitions, including those at M+ and the Hong Kong Palace museums, will offer free entry.

Other attractions such as Ocean Park, Ngong Ping 360 and the Peak Tram, are expected to dish out discounts too.

The offers are just part of more than 100 celebrations planned, which will also include flag-raising ceremonies, parades and carnivals.
