The observatory says the Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force for most of today, as a tropical depression remains over 700 kilometres from Hong Kong.
It said strong winds are not expected today but the depression's outer rainbands are affecting the northern part of the South China Sea.
The observatory said the depression is expected to intensify gradually and move in the general direction of Hainan Island in the next couple of days before moving towards the western Guangdong coast.
Depending on intensity, distance and change in local wind strength, the observatory said it would assess the need for the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 between later tomorrow and Friday.
