The observatory says it will decide on the need for the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 either later on Thursday or on Friday, as a tropical depression continues to strengthen and edge closer to Hong Kong.

It issued the Standby Signal No. 1 after midnight, saying that will be in force for most of Wednesday, as the system is expected to remain over 700 kilometres from Hong Kong.

“Strong winds are not expected generally over the territory today, but its associated outer rainbands are affecting the northern part of the South China Sea and coast of Guangdong,” the observatory said.

Forecasters said with the depression expected to intensify gradually as it moves towards Hainan Island and the western Guangdong, it will be windy with occasional heavy squally showers in the latter part of the week.

Members of the public are advised stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
