An explosion at a fireworks factory in Hunan province has killed nine people and injured 26.

The blast occurred in Linli county, north of the city of Changde, on Monday morning.

Authorities used remote-controlled water cannon to extinguish a fire caused by the explosion.

They also said fears of further explosions complicated search-and-rescue operations.

The site of the tragedy is in a mountainous area, with no large water source.

The Ministry of Emergency Management has sent a working team to Hunan to oversee rescue efforts.

Officials said the cause of the explosion should be determined as soon as possible, and anyone found responsible must be held accountable. (Xinhua and agencies)
