The Immigration Department said higher fees and charges relating to visas/entry permits and travel documents will come into effect on September 8.

Under the proposal, a 48-page SAR passport with 10-year validity will cost HK$520, up from HK$460 currently, whereas fees for a 32-page document will go up from HK$370 to HK$430.

Among the other increases, a transit visa will cost HK$170, up from HK$120 at the moment.

In all, 28 immigration-related fees will see increases ranging from 3 percent to 51 percent.

"The government sets and reviews various fees and charges according to the 'cost recovery' and 'user pays' principles," an Immigration Department spokesman said.

"The fees will have little impact on the daily lives of most people and limited impact on general business activities."

The proposed legislative amendments will be tabled at the Legislative Council for negative vetting on July 2, and the fee revisions will take effect after completion of the necessary legislative procedures.
