The Gansu provincial government issues a statement on establishing an investigation team.
The Gansu provincial government announced on Saturday that it would establish a cross-department investigation team to probe "abnormal blood lead levels" of children studying in a kindergarten in the city of Tianshui.

Police had earlier arrested eight people, including the school principal and an investor, after over 200 children studying Peixin Kindergarten were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

CCTV said among 223 samples of food from the school tested by investigators, samples of a red date cake and a corn sausage roll contained lead content of 1052 mg/kg and 1340 mg/kg respectively -- far above the official limit of 0.5 mg/kg.

The report said officers traced the lead to paint, which was clearly marked as inedible.

In a statement, the Gansu government said the probe will involve several provincial departments and experts from the ministry of public health and environment, and will promptly release the investigation results. (With additional reporting by Reuters)
