The Fire Services Department on Friday launched an investigation after a man died in a fire in Tsuen Wan ‘s Shek Wai Kok Estate.
The blaze broke out at around 4pm in a flat on the 17th floor in Shek To House, with the fire area measuring six by five metres.
Firefighters deployed a breathing apparatus team and one water jet, and put out the blaze in less than half an hour.
Around 30 people were evacuated by firefighters, while 80 others left the building on their own.
During the operation, officers also found an unconscious man near Shek To House who was suspected to have fallen from the building during the blaze. He was later pronounced dead at Yan Chai Hospitlal.
Deputy Divisional Commander Lee Ho-yin said the cause of the fire was suspicious.
“First, when we received the report, the fire was quite large in scale. Second, upon arrival, we found the unit was severely burned. We also noticed some unusual circumstances. Additionally, we received preliminary information suggesting that the deceased may have had a dispute with the flat owner,” he said.
But he added that no accelerants have been found inside the flat so far.
Police, meanwhile, said the Tsuen Wan Crime Unit is investigating the case.
