The Observatory says it will consider issuing the Signal No. 10 depending on the changes in local winds associated with Typhoon Wipha. It made the statement shortly after issuing the Increasing Gale or Storm Signal No. 9 at 7:20 am on Sunday.

At 8 am, Typhoon Wipha was about 90 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong. According to its current track, Wipha will come as close as 50 kilometres south of the Observatory at around noon.

Hong Kong is expected to see frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms throughout Sunday, the Observatory added.

Members of the public are also urged to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports as seas will be high with swells.

Classes of all day schools and child care centres would be suspended on Sunday, the Education Bureau said.

The Immigration Department also announced that there are no services at all Births, Deaths and Marriage Registries while Signal No. 8 or above is in force.

Meanwhile, the Hospital Authority said accident and emergency services at public hospitals would maintain normal service - while outpatient services were suspended. _____________________________
