The Observatory said the Hurricane Signal No.10 is expected to remain in force early on Sunday afternoon as Typhoon Wipha was at its closest to Hong Kong.

"Wipha is now skirting about 50 kilometres to the south of the Hong Kong Observatory, posing considerable threat to Hong Kong. Under the influence of its eyewall, hurricane force winds are affecting parts of the territory," said Lee Fung-ying, acting senior scientific officer.

The Hospital Authority said two males had so far sought medical treatment at the Accident and Emergency Departments of public hospitals during the typhoon.

As of 10am, the Government's 1823 Call Centre and the Fire Services Department said they had received a total of 85 reports of fallen trees.

There have so far been no reports of landslides or flooding.

Earlier, the Home Affairs Department opened 34 temporary shelters with over 200 people seeking refuge.
