The new code of conduct regulating lawmakers’ behaviour will not deter potential candidates from participating in future elections, according to Legislative Council president Andrew Leung.

Starting from the next term, a new code will be in place as part of a move aimed at enhancing self-discipline among, and oversight over, Legco members.

Those violating the code may be suspended and see their remuneration forfeited.

Leung said on Thursday the regulations only lay out the least efforts that lawmakers should make.

“The amendments we made are not particularly harsh or new," he said.

"We are just focusing on all the expectations from ourselves and from the Hong Kong people, their expectations towards what legislative councillors should do.

“We do not see this would be barring new candidates coming to serve Hong Kong people.”

Lawmaker Martin Liao added that candidates can pore through the details before deciding whether they want to stand in elections.

The third reading for the code passed unanimously on Wednesday.
