Police said they arrested a 17-year-old male on Friday on suspicion of drug trafficking following the death of a 16-year-old male in Heng Fa Chuen, with the incident suspected to be linked to the consumption of the space oil drug.
According to police, officers responded to a report on Thursday evening after the 16-year-old was found unconscious at his home.
He was rushed to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
Wong Cheuk-kei, Inspector of the Eastern District's Regional Anti-Triad Unit, said police discovered a significant quantity of drugs during a subsequent search of the deceased's bedroom.
"Police seized two suspected electronic cigarette cartridges, two electronic cigarettes suspected of containing space oil, a package of marijuana weighing approximately 14 grammes, a cup containing about 5 millilitres of suspected liquid methamphetamine, and 494 packets of suspicious powder from the deceased's residence," he said.
Wong said police investigations revealed that another male had visited the residence around the time of the incident.
"The arrested individual is 17 years old, holds a Hong Kong identity card and claims to be a secondary school student. We believe this suspect carried some drugs, including space oil, to the deceased's residence to supply him. This suspect is currently under investigation, and we will continue to thoroughly investigate this case," he said.
Chief Inspector of Eastern District Investigation Chan Chi-leung said that the arrested individual was a friend of the deceased.
He said while the exact cause of death awaits confirmation from an autopsy report, police suspect it is related to the consumption of space oil drugs.
