The Hospital Authority says a man has died in an industrial accident at a redevelopment project at Queen Mary Hospital.
In a statement, the authority said a worker employed by a lift engineering subcontractor became trapped on Sunday in one of the lift shafts. It said site management immediately called the Fire Services Department to rescue him.
The man, 58, was sent to Queen Mary Hospital's accident and emergency department, where he was certified dead.
The Architectural Services Department has suspended the relevant works at the site and has instructed the main contractor to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident. The Labour Department has also launched an investigation.
