Four more taxi fleets - Big Boss Taxi, Amigo, Big Bee and Joie - have been issued with five-year licences by the Transport Department.

In a statement on Monday, the department said that fleet taxi plates have to be displayed on both the front and rear of the vehicles, along with a fleet certificate on the windshields.

Passengers can book a taxi trip for a higher price on the fleets' mobile applications, but fleets have to charge the same fares as general taxis for trips hailed on the street.

The fleets must also provide multiple electronic payment options, with safety devices including dash cameras, in-vehicle cameras and global navigation systems installed.

Wong Tai-hoi of Big Bee said it is starting with about 200 taxis and plans to expand to 1,000 in the future.

“The taxi fleet system is a huge reform to the industry. We are confident to succeed,” he said.

A taxi driver surnamed Tang said he recently joined the Big Bee as a six-seater driver.

“I think the fleet is quite organised and disciplined. I also like their vehicle type. The vehicle I’m driving is quite unique. It is a six-seater. At the moment I think this is the best in the industry. I am very confident because the six-seater taxis have filled the gap with the lack of capacity for six passengers in the past,” he said.

Joie, meanwhile, said about 250 of its taxis will commence service by the end of the month, including more than 30 wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

The government has rolled out the taxi fleet system in a bid to revamp the industry and enhance service quality, with five companies operating fleets of up to 1,000 cabs initially.

Another fleet, SynCab, was granted a licence earlier this month.
