China has introduced a nationwide childcare subsidy programme starting in 2025, as part of broader efforts to support families and encourage childbirth.

The programme will offer families 3,600 yuan per year for each child under the age of three.

Those who were born before January 1, 2025, are eligible for pro rata payments.

For example, a baby born in December 2023 can receive a 24-month subsidy worth 7,200 yuan.

The subsidies will be exempt from individual income tax and will not be counted as household or individual income when identifying assistance recipients, such as those receiving subsistence allowances or classified as living in extreme difficulty.

"This is a major nationwide policy aimed at improving public well-being," CCTV said.

"It provides direct cash subsidies to families across the country, helping to reduce the burden of raising children."

Beijing said it expects more than 20 million families to benefit each year. (Xinhua/AFP)
