Torrential downpours triggered flooding in the southern part of Hong Kong on Tuesday, with hourly rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres recorded at the height of the severe rainstorm.
There were five confirmed cases of flooding across the territory as of 11.30am, with the Drainage Services Department deploying more than 120 emergency teams to inspect 240 black spots.
Flooding hit such areas as Stanley Village Road in Stanley and Wang Long Village on Lamma.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang said his bureau has activated the Emergency Monitoring and Support Centre and is working with various government departments and Hong Kong Observatory to closely monitor the situation.
Online footage appeared to show severe flooding in Shek O, where it looked like a river was flowing through the neighbourhood.
Elsewhere, several roads in Stanley were closed temporarily to all traffic due to flooding, including Stanley Beach, Stanley Mound and Stanley Village roads.
Lamma was also battered as water levels were seen rising along the walls of a building's ground floor.
The observatory warned that showers were particularly heavy over Southern district and Lamma when the black rainstorm alert was in force, saying "severe rainstorm of more than 100 millimetres of hourly rainfall" had been recorded.
